Rubber Dam / Dental Dam

What is rubber dam/dental dam?

Rubber dam or dental dam  is a piece of sheet ( latex or latex free ) that helps to keep the area isolated. It can be any colour eg. Green, Dark Blue, Baby Blue Purple, Black etc.

What is used for?

It's used for treatments that we need to keep the area dry eg. composite filling, fissure sealant , root canal treatment

What other instruments do we need ?

Dental dam punch  : We use it to make a hole on the rubber dam sheet where the clamp will be.

Dental dam forceps/ Clamp holder : We use it to hold the clamp and place it on the tooth

Maybe the dentist  will need dental floss to wrap it around the clamp.

and also, the dentist maybe will ask you to give him a piece os extra floss so they can adjust the sheet around the tooth.

Dental dam frame /Frame : We use it to stretch the dental dam sheet.

Dental  Clamps : The clamps are metal ( or they can be hard plastic). They constrict the cervical margin of the dental crown to hold the rubber dam/dental dam

Ps : It'd be very helpful to learn where to punch the dental dam sheet so you can have it ready for the dentist.  A very helpful tool is the rubber dam template! You will need to place it on the rubber dam sheet, mark it with a marker and then punch it ( please check the last photo) and all done!

You can check this video to get more familiar with the procedure

None of the photos that I used belong to me, I found them all online :)
