Denture's stages (4 stages)

Denture’s stages (4 stages)

1st visit: Impressions

-          Exam kit

-          Patient’s goggles

-          Patient’s bib

-          Bib holder

-          Plastic cup with mouthwash

-          Face mirror

-          Alginate powder

-          Alginate bowl

-          Alginate Spatula

or

-          Measurement cup & Scoop

-          Alginate adhesive spray

-          Impression trays for upper and lower jaw ( We need and upper and lower for dentures)

-          Impression tray holder

-          Laboratory docket (Lab docket)

-          Poly bag ( Clear bag to transfer the impressions)

-          Impression box

-          Disinfection solution (liquid form or tablet)

First we give the goggles to the patient and we place the bib on their chest (for extra support it’s good to use the bib holder)

On the area that we are going to work we can place tissue as the alginate powder can be very-very messy. (Do not forget to wear your full PPE – included Apron!)

Before we start the procedure we ask the dentist to try the impression trays in the patient’s mouth to make sure that we are using the right size and then, we rinse them, dry them and spray them with the alginate adhesive spray (it works like glue as it helps the alginate to stick on the impression tray). And we put the impression holders on the trays - if the trays themselves don’t have.

Then, depends on what size of the impression trays we will use, we have to measure how many scoops and how much water we will use. Normally for the small size tray is 1 scoop and a half, for medium size tray is 2 scoops and for the large size tray is 3 scoops – but always check with the dentist on how many scoops they want for the procedure.

There is a video on Youtube that says how to mix the alginate:

After the dentist takes the impressions we rinse them with the water in the sink, we make sure that there is no blood or any food remain and we put them in the impression box with water and the disinfected solution (liquid form or tablet) for 10 minutes. When it’s done, we rinse them again, we wrap them with tissue, we wet them and we place them in the poly bag. (The reason we wet them it to keep them moisturise).

On the laboratory docket we should write the name of the dentist, the name and the address of the practice and the ID of the patient (Avoid writing the full name of the patient for confidentiality reason), you write your name and you sign on the box that says ‘’Disinfected’’ ‘’Signature’’.

Always make sure that the patient doesn’t leave from the surgery with full alginate on their face, you can use wet tissue to help them remove it.

·          In regards to the impressions taken: Make sure that when you wet it, you squish it a bit as you don’t want to be very wet in the poly bag because the poly bag might open during the transport. L

·         When you take the impressions, you have to put them in the clinical fridge to keep them at the right temperature so they will no dry.

·         Normally, it takes around 15 working days for the laboratory to finish the work and to send it back to you.

2nd visit : Bite registration - The denture will be in wax without teeth.

*When we receive the denture from the laboratory we should always rinse, disinfect them in the impression box with water and the disinfect liquid or tablet for 10 minutes, rinse them again.

The dentist might ask for special trays, special trays are trays designed for the specific patient and are sent from the laboratory. If they do, then you’ll have to mix alginate and to take impressions.
